Open Adoption and Us

We can’t imagine the difficulty of deciding whether to have someone else parent your child, though we of course recognize that there are times when this is the best option available. We think that, generally speaking, when a birth family and adoptive family choose to come together in adoption, open adoptions are the healthiest option for everyone, but especially for the adopted child. If we come together with you for us to adopt your child, we want a very open adoption—where we would have regular, continued contact between our family and yours—to allow your/our child to have an ongoing understanding of his first and adoptive families, to see how he/she is valued by everyone involved, and to let you see how your/our child is nurtured. Your/our child would know the love of emotionally healthy members of both families from day one, and moving forward through life. We would want to work with you to find the best ways to create and maintain a mutual relationship of honesty and care.

We are open to adopting a child of any racial or ethnic background, and if we end up with a child of another heritage than our own European mutt ancestry, we would ensure that our and our child's lives would include adults, friends, activities, books, etc. of his/her heritage, as well as our own.

If you think you are interested in engaging with us to make an adoption plan, we can connect you with counseling that we would pay for. It is your right to be supported in your decision-making process, whatever conclusions you draw. If we do engage in an adoption plan together, we are available to help you with living expenses and medical costs around your pregnancy. Exactly how that all works depends on the laws of the state where you live. We would connect you with our adoption attorney—who is well-known for providing great birth mom support without coercion—if we get to the point in the process where you want to move forward with us for the adoption plan.We want everyone in the adoption to feel nurtured and cared for, so we are striving to create an environment and relationship where that will happen.
